Best Hair Accessories for Summer

When I was just one day old, my mother put a pink Velcro hair bow on my head so everyone would know I was a girl. That was the beginning of my relationship with hair accessories. Hair bows, headbands, clips, and barrettes -- I've tried all forms of "hair flair" throughout the years. And thankfully, hair accessories have never really gone out of style. But lately we've been in a true hair flair era. From Lady Gaga's hair bow to the fictional (but still fashionable) Blair Waldorf and her signature headbands, hair accessories are having a major moment.

As a statement piece, a la Gaga, hair flair packs a lot of punch, but don't discount all the other amazing reasons hair accessories are a must-have in your closet. After all, I've had my fair share of bad hair days, and a pretty hair accessory has always proven to be a quick fix for awkward bedhead. And when my outfit is a bit uninspired (think white T-shirt and jeans), a sparkly barrette dresses up the whole look. Plus, it's a perfect summer trend; during a blazingly hot day, a headband or clip keeps your hair up and away.

But the best reason to love hair flair? It won't break the bank. It's super inexpensive, so you can easily buy a few hair accessories for under 20 pounds. (How's that for a deal?) Then, you have plenty of options when you tire of the one you're currently wearing. That's the beauty of hair flair: it makes switching up your style easy. If you haven't figured it out already, hair accessories have this remarkable way of saving the day.

Polka Dot Bow

Perhaps the most classic form of hair flair, the hair bow adds a bit of girly appeal to any outfit. Plus, it's super easy to create with some fabric or grosgrain ribbon.

Oversized Flower

A pretty faux flower with a sparkly center is a great statement piece, but when it comes to wearing extra large hair accessories, keep the rest of your jewelry to a minimum. A good rule of thumb? Your hair accessory shouldn't be much bigger than the palm of your hand.

Head Scarf

Have a bunch of scarves collecting dust in your closet? Give them a new purpose in life by wrapping one around your head for instant hair flair. For a cute and casual vibe, wear your hair up in a high topknot.

Golden Hair Tie

You'll never want to go back to boring black hair ties after you switch over to gold. Whether in a braid or pony, a sparkly hair tie is a subtle way to amp up your style. Goody makes some metallic options, and you can pick them up at your local drugstore.

Boho Hair Chain

Nicole Richie was one of the first celebs to try boho hair, and now it seems like everyone is jumping on the hippie hair flair bandwagon. Hair jewelry like this mixed metallic chain looks fabulous when worn with long, beachy waves.

Real Flowers

What's even better than a fake flower clip? The real deal. Pick some daises and string them together in a hair garland for a breezy, flower child vibe.

Mini Clip

Bobby pins are oh-so-functional, but sometimes a tad ... boring. Add some bright color and visual interest with a mini hair clip that looks charming, and still gets the job done.

Sparkly Headband

For ultra fancy hair flair, your best bet is to stick with pretty materials like chiffon, lace, or sparkly rhinestones. You won't need much else in the way of jewelry. Simply pair with a flowy dress and heels to complete your look.

Rope and Tassels

Feeling crafty? Braid colored yarn or rope to create a simple headband. Just add some baubles at the end -- charms, beads, tassels -- whatever you have on hand, for a very DIY vibe.

Extra Wide Wrap

An extra wide headband is a cute alternative to a hat and is a super simple way to wear your hair down and flowing, without it hanging in your face .

Red Bandana

Even if you're more of a city girl than a country girl, a blue or red bandana is a perfect makeshift headband and ideal for going on a picnic or just running errands on the weekend.

Want More?

Now that you're all set in the hair accessory department, get summery hair to match.

I'm jumping on this bandwagon :-)

xoxo,
Angelique
